What should I bring to a yoga class?

It's ok not to know what to bring with you on your first visit to a yoga class, it can even be overwhelming so below I have provided a few key recommendations of the basics to help you get started and arrive feeling prepared, relaxed and supported.

The basics:

  • A yoga mat: a non-slip surface to help you feel stable and confident. These can be cheap and cheerful, some even have markings on them to help you position your feet.

  • Comfortable clothing: you'll want clothes you can move and breathe in without distraction. It's worth considering what fabrics will help you heat up or cool down.

  • A water bottle : you'll want to hydrate! BPA free bottles are best for hot environments and be careful of glass as it can break.

  • A small towel or blanket: useful for warmth, padding, relaxation and sweat dabbing.

Why are props important?

Props are a very good tool for aiding a safe and compassionate practise. Working within limitations is a very intelligent and safe practise so as not to exert or damage the muscle and joints. Props are there to meet you where your practise is today, not where you think it should be. Common props I use and that I would recommendation are:

  • Blocks: these can help bring you closer to the floor and improve alignment as well as reduce strain.

  • Straps: great for extending your reach and creating that extra bit of space as well as supporting tight muscles.

  • Bolsters and blankets: these offer support, padding, grounding and gentle or deep relaxation.

Props are essential for slow and restorative practices and they can help support the body to feel safe enough to relieve tension. Yoga is not about creating poses, it is about creating a sustainable practise that is accessible and inclusive.
